La Santa Junior Pro 2012

Top Junior Pro Surf Event is Won by Portugal´s Vasco Ribeiro
May 2012 - The very best under 21 Surfers from all over Europe, Reunion Island and Marroco were in La Cicer (the west part of Las Canteras in Las Plamas) for the first event of the 2012 ASP Junior tour. The event was massively important to these professional surfers who were all keen to start their 2012 campaign strongly.
Rob Gunning, ASP Europe's Tour Manager, said he was "very happy" to return to the beautiful island of Gran Canaria for this classic event on the European Junior Tour. As an ASP 3-Star rated event this season, the Gran Canaria Santa Pro Junior was always going to be highly contended as one of the European tours most lucrative events with the most rankings points on offer and an impressive $15,000 prize-money up for grabs.
"The ASP is thrilled to go back to Gran Canaria again this year", Rob said before the event. "This event is definitely becoming a classic on the European Junior Tour and all surfers, teams and officials are delighted to travel to the warm Canary Islands once again. This year it will be a decisive event for sure as it will offer the most rankings points and give the winner a great advantage towards the end of the year's European Title hunt. Everyone was eager to go to the Canary Islands. It's warm, it's beautiful and we always get good waves, it's our dream destination in Europe !"
After a display of dazzling surfing throughout the event, Vasco Ribeiro (PRT) was the eventual winner of the 2012 Gran Canaria Santa Pro Junior.
The champ (who won the same event last year) beat in-form Vicente Romero from Spain.
"I knew it was going to be a tough heat, he (Vicente Romero) was probably the best surfer in this whole event" Ribeiro said. "I got lucky this first wave came to me, and from then I just kept getting waves and he didn't. I'm super happy to win this important event !"
Winning his second Gran Canaria Santa Pro Junior in a row, Vasco Ribeiro keeps the Portuguese legacy alive in the Canarian archipelago. For the last three years, Portuguese riders have dominated the event and showed that Portugal is a great talent pool for European up-and-comers.
"All the Portuguese think there's something special between us and the Canary Islands because two years ago Filipe Jervis, another Portuguese, won here, and then last year I won so everybody's pushing so we win it all here ! I'm just stoked and I want to congratulate Vicente who surfed incredible!"
Vicente Romero (ESP) 19, has seemed unstoppable up until the final heat of the event but unfortunately didn't manage to find the rare opening shoulders to display his aerial skills against Vasco Ribeiro.
So, last year's ASP Europe ranked 3rd surfer Vasco takes an early lead on the 2012 title race and will have a great advantage with his win here in Las Palmas.
