Junior Surfing - "Who wants their kid to be a surferdude?"

In this article, Surf Canaries' Daniel Alcock explains to parents why we shouldn't try to keep our kids out of the water, but to encourage them to get involved, even just to try the sport.

So it's the age old problem ; the kid wants to surf but the parents really don't like the idea of having a surferdude hippy as a kid. But it may not be as bad as it seems at first glance... I am an advocate of getting children involved in watersports from a young age and as island dwellers, our kids should be comfortable and safe in the water and take advantage of our incredible conditions.

Why Surf?
Not all sports offer kids the fun of being in the water as surfing does. The atmosphere of a kids surf session is 100% about fun and this is how sport should be! Surfing is just a sport, but it offers a simple, naturalistic way of life that appeals to kids (of all ages!).

Our Future Champions
As in many sports, the elite of surfing generally started at a young age. It is true that we can breed champions on the island. We have extremely consistent waves and perfect climate which means they can train every day. The islands (small as they are) have bred Olympic gold medallist sailors (such as Molina y Doreste) and wind surfers such as Bjorn Dunkenbeck (resident here since a young child and multiple world windsurf champion), Marcos Perez (world champion 1999) and Daida Morena (2007 women's windsurf champion). All these world champions from an island with a population of less than 1million inhabitants, it's only a matter of time before we see a surf champion emerge from here.

Health
Surfing gets a kid in shape fast and mentally accustoms the child to a healthy way of life. Just offer a surfer kid a cigarette and they would throw it back in your face - anything that would inhibit catching a good wave would be out of the window!

Life Training
Things learnt whilst surfing are also invaluable. Surfing teaches the child discipline, respect and how to deal with problems, challenges and defeats. For instance, normal kid's stuff such as problems at school, with other children or disagreements with parents are always fought with blame ("it's not my fault") or crying etc, but in the water, the challenges set by the ocean are un-arguable. The child has to accept quickly the situation, react and adapt to it. This is a very important life skill learnt in the water.

Friendship
The friendship bonds made through surfing are some of the strongest bonds the child may see in his/her life. Surfing buddies offer safety, fun, support and training partners on and off the water and really lead to a friendship different to that of the normal playground relationships.

It is pleasurably refreshing listening to my kids in the Surf Canaries Club talking about such things in life and how their take on things is so relaxed and un-complicated. It is really gratifying to watch them grow up with surfing and seeing its effects on their lives.

Feel free to contact Danny for surf classes throughout the Semana Santa period.
